All Time Locomotive Roster

The Chicago Central's motive power roster consisted entirely of used four-axle locomotives. Most of which were acquired from the Illinois Central Gulf as part of the line's purchase of the Iowa Division. While many locomotives were repainted into their attractive red scheme, most of the locomotives remained in their original IC or ICG paint schemes. While the CC did lease some six-axle locomotives, in the form of VMV SDP45s, the company's managers decided to stick with the four-axle locomotives for fleet versatility. Besides leasing the SDP45s from VMV, the CC also leased GP38-2s & GP38s from Helm and GP40s from Conrail.

Notes:

  1. Ex-MILW same numbers: GP9's rebuilt to 2000 hp and classified as GP20.
  2. Ex-IC 200: First Paducah diesel rebuild
  3. Ex-IC 1026A, 1009:. TRA and NW2 rebuilt to 1300 hp and classified as SW13.
  4. Ex-ICG 1428. SW9 rebuilt to 1200 hp w/new cab and classified SW14.

  20. Ex-ICG same numbers: Labeled "Assigned Service Do Not Occupy". CC 9439-9440 later set up for lead service.
    They became IC 8418 & 8419 and received IC's "Death Star" paint scheme. Eventually retired by IC.

  1. Leased from VMV/PAL  in 1987. VMV 6688 had ATS installed to lead in CC. VMV 6688 was also rebuilt by EL with an SD45-2 carbody.
