The Illinois RailNet started operations in
December 1997 on the former Ottawa Branch with a single CF7 and two B23-7s
leased from Livingston Rebuild Center Inc. After acquiring the Rockford Branch
in 1999 from the BNSF, the IR leased two more geeps from sister railroad NKC
RailNet. Typically the two CF7s worked the Rockford Branch and the B23-7s and
the GP7 worked the Ottawa Branch. Occasionally the GP7 would work the Rockford
Branch, while of the CF7s would work the Ottawa Branch. In October 2004 the IR
acquired the Mt. Morris and LaSalle Branches from the BNSF. This required more
locomotives and initially it was thought only two more locomotives were needed.
Four B23-7s were sent from the shuttered Camas Prairie RailNet.

1. CSP 1-4 arrived in October 2004
after Illinois Railnet commenced operations on the BNSF Mt. Morris and LaSalle
Branches.
2. NKCR 2-3 are lettered for Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado RailNet. Units acquired
by Illinois RailNet.
3. CF7s were originally built as F7s and rebuilt by the ATSF.
4. B23-7s were delivered to NS with high short-hoods. These were lowered by LRC
when rebuilt.
