All Time Motive
Power Roster |
From it's start-up in 1977, until
the end of the 20th Century, the KB&S was one of the last bastions for 4
axle Alco diesel locomotives. While it wasn't that the KBS preferred Alco
locomotives over EMD, it just seemed that way to railroad enthusiasts. The fact
was, that in the late 1970's and into the 1990's, Alco's were a lot cheaper on
the resale market than EMD's of the same horsepower rating. The KB&S
eventually rostered up to nine Alco locomotives or four different model types.
They kept many of them running into the 1990's by parting out some of the less
reliable ones. Unfortunately time and a change in the used locomotive
market spelled the end for the Alcos. By 2000 KBS had only a few Alcos in
operations and leased several first generation EMD geeps to fill out their
roster. In late 2003, with only two Alcos in active service, KBS acquired six
de-turbocharged GP40s (KBSR 701-706), classified GP38-3s, from National Railway
Equipment. The two remaining Alcos (KBSR 308 & 321), were placed in
serviceable storage in the early part of January 2004.
