C&NW Heritage Locomotive

About the Locomotive:

"Proud Heritage - Powerful Future". These are the words that adorn the side of five specially painted Union Pacific locomotive. The fifth installment, the UP 1995,  pays homage to the Chicago & North Western. Painted in the same yellow and green first used on C&NW locomotives in 1939, it is patterned after the "lightening stripe" scheme used on C&NW's last locomotives. The ball and bar logo design was trademarked in 1891 and served as the C&NW's logo until it was merged into the Union Pacific in 1995. The "Employee Owned" logo on the nose was used in the 1970's and 1980's, when the railroad was in fact employee owned.  C&NW's first passenger diesels had quite a bit of aluminum leaf highlights, hence the silver striping and logo outlines.

About the Photo:

Like the four other heritage locomotives, the UP 1995 was covered with a tarp until the day of its unveiling. On the morning of July 15th, 2006, the tarp was removed at the Proviso Diesel Facility in Northlake, IL. After the locomotive was quickly serviced it was sent under its own power to an employee celebration at the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. Before the engine departed Proviso the locomotive was posed for this never to be repeated photograph.
